When booking an appointment many of our patients inquire which of our therapists offer deep tissue massage in Victoria. At Geometry we are proud to respond that all of our RMTs are fully trained in deep tissue massage along with a wide range of other massage techniques.
Deep tissue massage is a popular form of massage therapy that focuses on deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. It is excellent for those looking to relieve muscle tension and tightness. The techniques are slower than a traditional relaxation massage, and the pressure permeates deeper to target areas of tension and pain.
“Deep tissue massage is best for giving attention to certain painful, stiff “trouble spots” in your body. The massage therapist uses slow, deliberate strokes that focus pressure on layers of muscles, or other tissues deep under your skin. Though less rhythmic than other types of massage, deep tissue massage may be therapeutic — relieving chronic patterns of tension and helping with muscle injuries, such as back sprain.
Deep tissue massage works by focusing on chronic muscle tension or injury often involve adhesions “knots” recognizable as bands of painful, rigid tissue. Adhesions can interfere with proper circulation and result in pain and inflammation. Many people also experience an inhibited range of motion. Your therapist will first “warm up” the area to be treated with gentle manipulations to encourage blood flow to the area. Once the muscles have started to relax your therapist will use a deep gliding pressure along the length of the muscle fibers or a pressure across the grain of the muscle to treat the adhesion and restore circulation. Throughout the treatment your therapist will progressively target deeper layers. The result is a progressive relaxation of tense muscles. As proper circulation is restored toxins (metabolic waste) that may have built up over time may be released into the blood. To help the body manage these toxins drink plenty of water before and after your treatment.
Deep tissue massage can involve some mild discomfort or pain, but it should never be unbearable. During your treatment, always communicate any pain outside of your comfort range to your therapist so they can adjust the technique to maximize your benefit. It is also common to experience some mild soreness in the following day as your body completes the healing process. This soreness is normal and should subside within a day or two. Deep tissue massage is well suited but not limited to treating chronic pain and injury that involve low back and neck stiffness.
Deep tissue massage is a great option for anyone who carries chronic tension in their muscles. If you work a desk or office job and spend a lot of time hunched over a computer or tend to carry stress in your shoulders then consider a deep tissue massage. Shoulder and back pain are common aliments that can be treated with deep tissue massage. It is also well suited for athletes and those looking to recover from an injury. Deep tissue massage can improve postural problems and increase mobility.
